Solitary Person and Landmark - Project 4

by @im_a_muppet on June 22, 2007

Goal: To create an image of a person in front of a busy landmark. But to only have the person and the land mark in the photo.

Motivation: To take a photo like this but without people in the background. All you want is the subject (Girl in denim skirt) and the background (statue, etc.), no other people. This could be used by photographers at busy tourist attractions. They could take photos of you at busy places but still ensure that you have a good picture with out unwanted people.
NYC

Approach: To take multiple images of landmark and from that create an image with no people by taking the median of the pixels over the range of images. Then take a photo with the subject in front of the landmark. In this photo just the subject should be in focus. Use this image to create a detail mask and take the pixels from the first hybrid image for the background and the pixels from the last image that have sharp edges for the foreground.

Deliverables: I hope to have this as a self contained program. The idea would be to pass the program a location containing the
images needed to create the background and a file with the subject.

References: This is similar to some work done in “Interactive Digital Photomontage” paper. However what is novel about this is that the result will have one variance and will hopefully not require any manual steps.

Result
Hopefully an image like this where there are no unwanted people.
